There are “two distinctive types of habitual criminals,” Berne writes. “Those who are in crime primarily for profit, and those who are in it primarily for the game.” Criminals in it for the game relish a “battle of wits” but often wind up in prison, because of a mixture of guilt, shame, and vanity. In fact, they may want to be caught, because “being found is the necessary payoff,” the due recognition of their daring.
